Skiing vs Snowboarding

Saturday, January 24, 2015

I have been trying to get Jer to snowboard for years to no avail. We don't get to go often so when we do he wants to do what he knows he enjoys; valid point.

I, on the other hand, will try anything (well almost anything) once and gave his beloved skiing a try a couple years ago and it did not go well.

I sucked and kept wrecking with ski poles flying this way and the skis flying off the other. Then I had to walk all over creation picking up the pieces of my disastrous falls. What a big pain in the ass! Now I just stick to snowboarding.

After our latest trip to the slopes I have come to the conclusion that every snowboarder(or should I say amateur snowboarder) actually needs a skiing buddy. Here is why...

The Dreaded Chairlift

I have to mentally prepare myself the whole ride up for my not so graceful dismount off the dreaded chairlift. Where am I going to put my foot, how the hell am I going to stop or turn, and/or how the hell am I not going to take out a poor bystander?

The answer...my skiing buddy. You rarely see skiers wreck when it comes to getting off the lift because they just easily glide right off. So just have them grab a hold of you and continue to hold you up until you come to a safe stop. I did not fall or take out any children this time. Winning.

The Dreaded Flat Surface

You just accomplished the chairlift so you strap yourself in ready to conquer the mountain. Only to find out that you have to pass a bit of flat surface to actually make it to the down hill area.

For snowboarders this entails a lot of hopping, shimmying, knee crawls, and the tush push all just to move an inch. But if you have a ski buddy just grab one of their poles and hang on for the ride.

Equipment Assitance

Skiers pretty much snap in and they are good for the rest of the day. Snowboarders this is not the case. We are constantly strapping and unstrapping. So much so that our ski buddy may get a little antsy and will actually strap you in themselves for something to do. I can get used to this.

Skiers are generally faster (than me)

I tend to pump my breaks quite a bit (because face planting is not something I enjoy) so skiers always whiz right by me nearly hitting me in the face with their poles.

My ski buddy will either go ahead a bit and watch me come down or wait a bit and then follow me down.  This means that they are always watching so if I ever did fall or plow face first into a fence (yes this did happen) they will be there to assist.

I will now stop nagging him to try snowboarding because, shit, why ruin a good thing?

Grab a ski buddy and hit the slopes. It will make your day so much easier. I can't say the same for your ski buddy but let's be honest we make them look so much cooler.

  2. This is hilarious. I've only been skiing once but I remember the face planting and the small children knocking me over and realisation that I'm terribly uncoordinated. I wish I had been snow boarding though. I would have been just as terrible, but I would have looked cooler for the first 20 seconds leading up to the accident! ;)

  4. You should give it another go, Emilie. I tend to stick to the bunny slopes so I look way more advanced than I really am.
